19 March 2011Saturday 19th March, 2011 is the date for the 8th Auckland Half Ironman. Over the last seven years there has been steady growth in the fields with many choosing the Auckland Half Ironman as their first event over the distance. Elite competitors have also fronted up with Cameron Brown, Bryan Rhodes, Clas Bjorling, Gordo Byrn and Scott Molina to name a few.
The race starts at Maraetai with a 2km swim and is followed by a 90km bike that covers much of the old Auckland Ironman bike course. It finishes with a 21km three lap picturesque run around the foreshore of the Hauraki Gulf. VenueThe event centre will be at Kawakawa Bay on the edge of the Hauraki Gulf, 17km east of Clevedon. Kawakawa Bay is well known to many previous Ironman New Zealand competitors when the race was held in Auckland. The cycle leg is almost entirely on the old Ironman course. The run leg is along a spectacular piece of foreshore with sea views the entire way, and the majority of the run under Pohutukawa trees which will provide perfect protection on a hot sunny day.
RegistrationRegistration is at the Orca Store, 1010 Beaumont St, Westhaven from 10am to 7pm on Friday 18 March. You must have your bike checked prior to this. Bike Checks Compulsory please make sure you have your bike (and helmet) checked by the team at iBike. Checked bikes will have a sticker applied, and this is required to be granted access to transition on race morning. Bike checks can be done from 1st March through to 18th March.
ibike.co.nz Here is how it works: Your red plastic registration bag is for your running gear (T2). You will give us this bag (which may include running gear, food, vaseline, bandaids etc) on race morning at Maraetai and we will transport it to T2 for you. After the swim, we will transport all of the clear plastic T1 bags (with whatever you leave in them - wetsuit, goggles etc) to the event centre at T2. Once you arrive at T2, your running gear will be handed to you by a marshall, rack your bike and head off on the run. Swim gear can be collected after the event in exchange for your race number. Attendance of Race Briefing is compulsory. Race Briefing 8:15am at Maraetai Beach.
StartWe will be offering transport for athletes from Kawakawa to Maraetai on race morning. Athletes without support will be required to rack their bikes at Maraetai early in the morning, then drive on to Kawakawa to leave their cars and use our transport back to the start.
Race Day Schedule
| Short CourseA short course option is also available. Swim 1km, Bike 30km, Run 7km. Please note that there is no prizemoney for the short course event. The short course uses the same transition and start/finish areas. The swim course is 1 lap, the bike ride is just the Maraetai to Kawakawa Bay section, and then one lap of the run course.

Safety & HealthAt Media Unlimited our primary aim is to host a safe race that every competitor enjoys. While we take every care to make the event as safe as possible, it is each competitor's responsibility to ensure their own safety and the safety of those around them. Electronic devices such as ipods and MP3 players are not permitted at any stage of the race.
DrinksWe will have Leppin Enduro Booster (Lemon & Lime) and water available in bottles at 60km on the bike. The same will be available in cups every 3.5km on the run, plus coke and bananas.
Feed ZoneThere will be a feed zone at the crest of Snake Hill on the way out (32km mark). This is the zone where you may have someone hand you food and drink. You need to arrange this yourself. No other outside help is permitted.
Bike TurnaroundThe bike turnaround is now spraypainted on the road. It is right at the start of the 50km/h zone as you approach Kaiaua from the north. This is also the 60km mark where the drink stop will be.
DraftingThe rules are simple. There must be a 7 metre gap between cyclists, and a passing move must be made at 10% greater speed. This means you need a gap big enough to fit a car between you, and if the person in front is doing 30km/h, you need to be doing at least 33km/h or you'll get 'pinged'. There will be no advice out on the course, the draft buster simply writes down your number. First offence = 3 minutes, second offence = 5 minutes penalty, 3 offences and you're out. We will have 5 draft busting vehicles operating and you won't be informed until after the finish.
